The battle in my backyard: trellis nets against traditional stakes

I've been setting up my tomato garden every spring and the support system is a BIG deal. Last year I went with those stretchy trellis nets and they made training vines a breeze, just tie them once and forget it. This season I'm testing solid wooden stakes after a storm knocked over my net setup, and they seem way sturdier. But now I miss how the nets let light through and kept everything tidy without much work. My friend says nets are perfect for small spaces and fast growth, while my uncle argues stakes give roots room and won't sag over time. I have half my plants on nets and half on stakes, and the difference is already obvious in how they grow. It's turning into a real headache trying to pick one method for next year. What's your take on the best support for a simple garden setup?

Whoa, hold up - a well anchored net system shouldn't blow over in a storm. Did you maybe not stake the net posts deep enough?

Totally get this debate, been there with my tomatoes too. My nets got shredded in a bad wind storm last July, left a real mess. Those wooden stakes feel like they could survive anything, no question. But you're right, training vines on nets was way faster, just weave them through. Ended up sticking with stakes for the peace of mind, even if it's more work to tie them up each week. Sometimes simple and strong beats clever and easy.

I'm all too familiar with nets failing in bad weather, my own setup looked like a spider web after a party. loganc42 is spot on about deep anchors, but I never seem to get it right. Stakes might be boring, but they save me from my own gardening mistakes.
