My grandpa said to always use a tack cloth before the final coat, but my buddy in Chicago swears a microfiber rag with mineral spirits is better.

I ignored my grandpa's advice on a mahogany dresser last month and ended up with a ton of dust nibs in the finish, so now I'm curious which method you all use and why.

Wait, you used mineral spirits on the raw wood right before finishing? That can leave a residue that messes with the finish sticking. A tack cloth is made to grab dust without leaving anything behind. Maybe the dust nibs weren't from skipping the tack cloth, but from the mineral spirits not fully drying or leaving a film.

Actually @green.grant, mineral spirits evaporate totally clean if you let them dry.
