Had a client bring in a 1920s oak sideboard last week, said 'just make it look new'. I spent 3 days stripping off 5 layers of paint to find perfect quarter-sawn grain underneath. Felt like winning the lottery.

Finding that hidden grain must have been such a rewarding moment.

Honestly, it just feels like the bar is on the floor these days. Finding something that should be basic feels less like a win and more like a sad reminder of how things have gotten. That little bit of reward is totally wiped out by the frustration of the whole search. Makes you wonder why it was hidden in the first place.

Exactly, the search itself ruins the find.
