A seminar in Atlanta back in 2015 completely changed how I handle water-based finishes

I went to a finishing trade show there, mostly to see the new gear. One demo showed a guy using a specific additive, a flow enhancer, with a water-based poly. He got a glass-smooth coat with no brush marks at all. Before that, I just fought with the stuff, dealing with streaks and a short open time. I started adding just half an ounce per quart to my mix, and it was a total game changer. The finish levels out so much better now. Anyone else pick up a trick like that from a show or demo that stuck with you?

Glass-smooth coat with no brush marks" just sounds like a sales pitch to me. I've used water-based stuff for years without any magic potions and it turns out fine. Maybe some people just overthink the process. A good brush and not working in a sauna seems to do the trick for most jobs.

Isn't the whole point that water-based stuff dries so fast it can cause brush marks? That's why people talk about additives. If you've never had a problem, maybe you're just working on small areas or in perfect cool weather. Try a big door panel on a warm day with plain water-based paint and see if you can keep a wet edge. Sometimes the "magic potion" is just about slowing things down enough for a DIYer to work.

You've painted a whole door panel without any drying issues?
