My core wash on a 2000 pound bronze pour in Tacoma started to slump right before the metal hit.
I had to grab a spare trowel and pack it back in place while the heat was already coming off the ladle, and I'm wondering if anyone has a better method for stabilizing a wash under that kind of radiant heat.

Yikes, that sounds like a personal hell.

Nah, that's just part of the job. You get a feel for when the core wash is getting soft from the ladle heat. I keep a bucket of dry sand mix right there to patch and firm it up quick. It's way faster than trying to trowel it back. Sometimes you just have to shield the worst spot with a scrap piece of sheet metal for a few seconds.

That sheet metal trick is smart, @kai_butler83. I've seen guys use a wet rag on a stick for a quick steam shield too, works on a smaller spot.
