Walked through a Whole Foods in Austin last week and counted 12 items labeled 'natural' that had high fructose corn syrup

The word 'natural' means basically nothing on packaging. One granola bar had corn syrup as the second ingredient. Does anyone actually check what loopholes they're using?

The label is just telling you where it came from, not what's in it. High fructose corn syrup comes from corn which is a natural plant, so technically it fits. People get too hung up on the word natural when they should be looking at the ingredients list instead.

That corn syrup loophole has been around since the 1970s when the FDA first defined "natural" to exclude synthetic ingredients only.

Remember when "all natural" started showing up on everything? My mom bought this juice once that said it was all natural, but the second ingredient was high fructose corn syrup. She was so mad. It's just a word they can slap on anything now. Makes you wonder why they even bother with the label.
