Old houses are full of those tiny mysteries. My place has a floorboard that groans only when the humidity drops below forty percent. Check the humidity reading on that gauge. In my experience, those little analog hygrometers can be off by ten percent or more. A digital one might show your floor starts talking at a different point entirely.

That "fix one spot and another starts talking" is so true. I had a squeak that only happened when the fridge compressor kicked on, turned out the vibration traveled through a shared wall stud.
