Question about using a chalk line on engineered hardwood

A homeowner in Charlotte watched me snap a line for a big floor and said, 'That string is leaving a mark, isn't it?' I checked and sure enough, the blue chalk dust was settling into the grain. Now I use a laser for layout on anything with a textured finish. What's your go-to method for keeping lines clean on pre-finished material?

Honestly, the laser is the right call. That blue chalk is a nightmare on anything porous. I've even seen it stain the bevel on some planks. For a quick pencil line, I'll use a white china marker on darker woods, but it wipes off too easy for a full layout. The laser just saves the headache.

My buddy tried that blue chalk on some oak floors last year, total disaster. It soaked right into the grain and left these faint blue ghosts along his cut lines. He spent HOURS trying to sand it out, and you could still see it in certain light. He bought a laser level the next day and never looked back.

It's funny how many problems are just about picking the right tool. We overcomplicate stuff when the simple fix is right there.
