My uncle swore by using a 1/4 inch trowel for vinyl plank, and I finally tried it on a job in Springfield.

He said it was the only way to get full coverage without ooze, but I've always used a 1/2 inch for years. On this 800 sq ft glue-down job, the 1/4 inch left a couple of high spots with almost no adhesive underneath. Had to pull up a whole section on day two. So, is a thinner trowel ever the right call, or was my uncle just stuck in his ways?

Thinner trowel? I mean, that sounds like a bad time waiting to happen.

Yeah, well... my last DIY project is proof you're right.

Used to be pretty confident about my methods until one project went sideways so fast I had to rethink everything. The camera angle in @the_cameron's post is what finally made it click for me though. Sometimes you just need to see someone else's failure to realize you've been doing it wrong the whole time.
