Found a weird fix for a squeaky floor in a 1920s house

I was working on a house in the Ballard area last week and the owner was going nuts about a squeak in the middle of the living room. I'd already tried screws and glue from below, but it kept coming back. Out of ideas, I grabbed a tube of powdered graphite from my truck, puffed it down between the boards, and worked it in. The squeak stopped completely. Has anyone else tried something that simple on an old floor that just wouldn't quit?

Honestly, powdered graphite works on sticky doors too.

Graphite makes a huge mess on carpets though.

Try a bar of soap instead. Shave a bit off the corner and rub it on the hinge pin. Way less messy than graphite in my experience.
