Appreciation post: Tiling directly on a prepared concrete floor

I know a lot of installers insist on that plastic layer under tile on concrete, but I think it's not always needed! Last month, I had a slab that was bone dry and perfectly flat, so I left the membrane out. I cleaned the concrete really well and spread a strong thin-set mortar. The tile looks great and hasn't moved a bit after several weeks! This approach cut down on material costs and installation time. In my view, if the base is solid and dry, you can skip the extra step. Trust your site check and good preparation!

Ever skip the membrane on a new pour? I did on my garage floor and it's still solid.
