Actually, a funky smell can mean it's turning into vinegar, which some people like.

My last batch in the garage smelled a little funky, but it was still drinkable. I mean, it's fermented tea, not a science project. People get so dramatic about smells. My cousin once threw out a whole gallon over a "vinegar note" and I just don't get it. Maybe it's just me but I feel like some folks are way too picky.
