My great aunt's river rock trick for fermenting pickles

She always used a clean, smooth river rock boiled for ten minutes to weigh down the veggies. I bought those fancy glass weights last year and they never sat flat in the jar. Going back to her method, my batches never get mold on top. It costs nothing and works every time, which feels like a win.

That river rock trick works until it doesn't. The real problem is that rocks can be porous, so even a good boil might not kill everything inside. A small crack you can't see can hide bacteria and spoil a whole batch. Those glass weights are annoying when they tilt, but they're non-porous and truly clean. Maybe try a small glass dish or a zipper bag filled with brine as a weight instead.
