Switched from hand digging post holes to a skid steer auger last spring
I used to spend all day digging post holes by hand for a 400 foot fence in Austin, getting blisters and slowing way down. Then I rented a skid steer with a 12-inch auger for $300 and knocked out all the holes in under 3 hours. Has anyone else found the rental cost is totally worth it compared to the headache of manual digging?

Man, it's just digging holes, not open heart surgery.

And honestly, @piper_burns, I used to think the same way. Like, suck it up and dig, it's not that hard. But after doing that 400 foot fence myself, I realized there's a difference between working smart and just working hard. The auger saved my back and my hands weren't wrecked for a week after. I'd way rather spend the $300 and keep my energy for something else, like actually enjoying the rest of the project instead of being too sore to lift my coffee cup.
