Had to pick between a 6-foot cedar fence or a 4-foot chain link for a corner lot in Fresno.

The homeowner wanted privacy but the city code said corner lots need lower fences for driver sightlines. I went with the 4-foot chain link and planted some quick-growing vines along it for them. What's your go-to fix when a client's dream fence bumps up against local rules?

Honestly? Lattice inserts are a total game changer.

Actually, Sullivan was talking about lattice inserts for chain link fences, not wood fences. It's a different product entirely. They're those plastic or vinyl strips you weave into the mesh. They do give privacy right away, which is the big selling point over waiting for vines.

Disagree with that call. I'd fight for the cedar fence every time. You can notch the corners or use lattice on the bottom section to meet sightline rules. A chain link with vines just looks messy and takes years to fill in. Clients pay for a real solution, not a workaround that still feels like a compromise.
