My mom swore putting a bay leaf in pasta sauce actually does something

She told me it adds depth and richness, so I tried it side by side last weekend with two identical pots. Could not taste a single difference even after simmering for an hour. Has anyone actually proven this works or is it just family lore?

You're totally right, I tried the same thing with my marinara a few months back and got zero difference either lol. My Italian grandma swears by it but I'm convinced it's just a tradition that stuck around for no real reason. I even bought fancy organic bay leaves and everything, still nothing.

Yeah same here @margaret_kelly55, I actually did a blind taste test with my family once just to prove a point. I made two pots of chili one with bay leaves and one without and nobody could tell which was which. My husband was like "wait which one had the bay leaf?" and I'm like exactly my point lol. I swear it's like the bay leaf industry just has us all brainwashed or something. I'm still gonna keep buying them though cause tradition I guess?
