My mom always said you lose most heat through your head, but my doctor friend laughed at me

Honestly, I brought it up at a BBQ in Denver last month when it was cold. I was wearing a beanie and told my friend, a doctor, that's why. He said that old army study was about people in full survival gear, so of course the only exposed part lost heat. He told me you lose heat evenly from any uncovered skin. Tbh, I felt pretty silly. Has anyone else had a family myth totally busted by a pro?

Man, that BBQ story hits home... my mom was full of those little rules. She was big on the swimming one @julia_lee mentioned, and also swore you'd catch a cold from going outside with wet hair. Took me years to stop rushing to dry it after a shower. It's funny how those ideas stick, even when you know better. You just end up feeling a bit silly when someone points it out.

Remember your mom telling you to wait an hour after eating before swimming? I heard that one's totally made up too.

So what other old sayings did your mom swear by that turned out to be wrong? I feel like every family has a few of those, and they're hard to shake even when you know the truth.
