Honestly, the 'wait 24 hours before reporting someone missing' thing is a dangerous myth
Tbh, I saw this on a crime show last week and it really got me going. That advice is completely wrong and can waste critical time. I volunteer with a local search group in Springfield, and our protocol is to call immediately if something feels off, especially for kids or vulnerable adults. The first few hours are the most important for finding someone safe. Police in my area have told us they'd rather get a call that turns out to be nothing than a delayed one. Has anyone else had to push back against this idea with their own family or friends?

Ugh, this myth drives me nuts. My aunt tried to use it when my teen cousin was late coming home from a friend's house. I had to tell her straight up, no, you call now. We called, and it turned out his phone died and he was just walking, but the police were totally cool about it. That "24 hour rule" isn't real, it's just TV stuff. If your gut says something is wrong, especially with a kid or someone who needs help, don't wait. Make the call.

Wait wait wait your aunt actually tried to pull that 24 hour rule? @margaret304 I'm sitting here shaking my head because my own mom did the same thing when I was like 16 and didn't come home till 2am. She was all "we have to wait 24 hours" and I was like Mom no that's not a thing. We called and the dispatcher literally laughed and said "TV makes us look bad, please call sooner." I swear that myth has caused so many problems.

And you're spot on about that. I had something similar happen with my nephew a few years back. He was 17, went to a movie with friends and just didn't come back. My sister was pacing the floor, kept saying "we should wait until morning." I told her no, we're calling now. I got on the phone with dispatch, explained he had a medical condition and we were worried. They had a car out looking within the hour. Turned out he'd gotten a ride with a friend who got lost, but the police were totally professional about it. That waiting game just puts people at risk. If you've got a bad feeling, trust it. The police would rather get a false alarm than a bad outcome.
