Dropped $90 on a fancy ice fishing shelter that leaked like crazy on Lake Stevens last winter
The first cold snap hit and I was soaked within an hour, shoulda just stuck with my old canvas tent. Has anyone else had bad luck with those pop-up shelters?

...and that's why I tell people to stay away from those plastic hub shelters. My buddy bought one of those Eskimo pop-ups a few years back. First trip out on Lake Mille Lacs the zipper froze solid. Had to cut my way out with a multitool at 2 in the morning. That was a long walk back to the truck. I still use my old two-pole canvas, it might weigh eighty pounds but at least I stay dry.

Cut your way out with a multitool at 2 AM... that's some real survival horror stuff right there. At least you didn't have to film it for a found footage movie. I bet that zipper is still frozen solid somewhere in a landfill, holding a grudge. Canvas might be heavy but at least it doesn't trap you in a plastic coffin when the weather turns.

Hang on, I gotta push back a little on the Eskimo pop-up thing. I've had one for three seasons now and never had a zipper freeze on me. You gotta hit them with a little silicone spray before the trip, keeps the ice from locking it up. The real issue with those shelters is the hubs snapping in high wind, not the zippers. Your buddy's bad luck sounds more like a user error than a design flaw, honestly. Did he ever try the spray trick or just let it sit out in a blizzard?
