My neighbor insisted I tape over my smart speaker's camera 'for privacy' and I thought he was nuts until my friend's kid accidentally video-called me from theirs.

Now I'm wondering if we're all just inviting tiny, unsecured cameras into our homes without a second thought.

What's the creepiest default setting you found during your deep dive?

Yeah the "unsecured cameras" part got me. Had the same wake up call last year. My roommate's google home started playing music from my spotify, no idea how. Went on a whole privacy settings deep dive after that. Found out a bunch of default settings were way too open. Just took an afternoon to go through every device and shut stuff down. Felt way better after.

Honestly that deep dive sounds like a lot of work for not much payoff. Most of those default settings exist to make the stuff actually work right. My smart speaker would be useless if it couldn't access my music. The real creep factor comes from companies selling the data, not my roommate accidentally playing a song. Locking everything down just breaks the convenience you paid for.
