PSA: Had to choose between a full motor rewind or just replacing the bearings on a 15 year old Montgomery unit
The motor was making that classic high pitch whine, and the building manager wanted the cheapest fix. I pulled it apart and saw the windings looked okay, just some dust. Went with just the bearing swap, about $400 in parts and a day's labor. It's been quiet for three months now, but I'm keeping an eye on it. Anyone else had a motor where you gambled on the bearings and it paid off?

Glad that gamble worked out for you. Margaretm23 is right about the bearings and the capacitor. Hope it stays quiet for a long time.

Actually, that high pitch can sometimes be windings if the varnish is breaking down. I've seen it happen. But yeah, bearings are the usual suspect for sure.

Good call. That high pitch is almost always bearings, not windings. I've saved a few old blower motors that way. Clean the windings with compressed air while you're in there, get all that dust out. Just keep a spare capacitor on hand for when that goes next, it's usually not far behind.
