Old timer told me my rail alignment tool was garbage, he was right

I had this older mechanic named Frank at the job site in Cleveland last spring. He told me to stop using the cheap digital rail alignment tool from Harbor Freight because it drifts after a few uses. I ignored him for about 3 months until I had a car bouncing like crazy on the 12th floor. Turns out my alignment was off by almost 1/8th of an inch. Switched to the brand he recommended, a used Hilti level kit, and it fixed the problem on the first try. Has anyone else had luck with older tools over new budget ones?

Frank probably learned that lesson the hard way so we wouldn't have to lol. Funny how 80s bubble levels are still more reliable than half the stuff they sell new now.

I saw @abbyg14 mention that same thing, old bubble levels are way more reliable.

Did you notice how Frank probably learned that trick the hard way too? I had almost the exact same thing happen with a laser level I picked up at a big box store. The thing was fine for about a week then it started giving me readings that were all over the place. Swapped it out for an old bubble level my dad gave me from the 80s and it's been dead on every time since. Sometimes the simple stuff just works better without all the fancy electronics getting in the way.
