Old timer called me out on my brake adjustment method

Ngl, I'd been doing brake adjustments the same way for 8 years until a retired mechanic saw me at a job in Seattle. He said my gap was too tight and showed me to leave 1/8 inch more clearance. Now I haven't had a callback on those jobs in over 6 months.

Old timers usually know their stuff... that extra clearance makes a big difference.

Yeah but the old timers also tend to forget that those extra inches of clearance on an old truck don't work the same on newer stuff with all the sensors and crumple zones built in. I've seen guys try to muscle a lifted 90s F250 through a tight gate that a modern Silverado with half the lift can barely squeeze through. The thing is, older trucks had simpler frames and less stuff hanging down low, so you could actually use that clearance. Modern trucks have all that emission crap hanging underneath plus the bed sits lower because of the redesigned chassis. It's not just about tire size anymore.

Man I was exactly in your shoes on this one. Used to think tight was right on everything until a buddy of mine who runs a fleet shop showed me the same thing with modern trucks. All that extra stuff under there plus the frame flex on newer rigs really does change how much room you actually need.
