My old foreman told me to always carry a small magnet in my tool bag, said it would save me a dropped screw one day. He was right.
I was working on a traction machine in a 12-story building downtown last Tuesday. Had a panel off and was adjusting a micro switch. My hand slipped and a tiny 8-32 set screw went flying. It bounced once and disappeared into the dark gap between the car top and the hoistway wall. I thought I was done for, looking at a long delay. Then I remembered the magnet. Taped it to the end of my telescoping mirror, fished around for maybe two minutes, and pulled the screw right out. What's one simple tip you got from a veteran that actually paid off big time?

Man, my old boss told me the same thing... I just wish I'd listened before losing that screw down an elevator shaft.

Maybe @fisher.adam's uncle was just lucky, because a golf tee seems like a pretty weak fix to me.

My uncle was a mechanic and swore by keeping a golf tee in your pocket. Sounds silly, but one time a vacuum line on my truck cracked at a campsite six miles from the nearest store. That tee plugged the hole perfectly long enough to get me back to town. I still keep one in the glove box.
