My boss told me to always use the factory grease on door rollers, but I think he's wrong
So we had this job in a high rise downtown, and the door rollers on the 15th floor were making that awful grinding noise. My boss, who's been doing this for like 30 years, told me to just clean them and reapply the factory grease from the kit. I mean, I did it, but the noise came back in maybe two weeks. I got fed up and tried a different tack. I cleaned them again and used a synthetic lithium grease I keep for my car. That was six months ago, and the floor is still quiet as can be. I think the factory stuff is too thin for our climate here, it just gets gummy and dries out. He still swears by it, but I've seen the proof on my own calls. Has anyone else had a similar thing happen with a specific part or grease type?

Ever think the factory grease is too thin, @joelwells? I switched to marine grease for humid jobs and it lasts way longer.

Look, I get your point, but your boss has seen thirty years of doors. That factory grease is made for those exact rollers. You putting car grease on it might work now, but in five years you could be dealing with a different problem, like it eating away at the plastic parts. He's probably seen guys try all sorts of stuff that backfires later. Sometimes the right way seems slower, but it's about knowing the whole system.
