Just realized my old way of testing the governor rope grip was wrong after a scare in a Boston high-rise

The rope slipped during a test because I was going off feel instead of using the spring scale like the book says. Anyone else have a close call that made you go back to the basics?

Happens with so many things, like trusting a wobbly shelf instead of checking the bracket.

Actually, sometimes that wobble is fine for years. People fix things that aren't broken and end up making it worse. If a shelf has held up this long, messing with the bracket might strip the screw or crack the drywall. A little lean doesn't mean it's going to fall tonight. Constant checking just wastes time you could spend actually using the thing.

Yeah I learned that the hard way with a bookshelf last year. It was leaning for weeks and I just kept pushing books to the other side. Then one night the whole thing just tipped over. Now I check the wall anchors on anything that feels even a little off. It's not worth the mess or the scare.
