Had a passenger tell me something that still bugs me
This old guy in a high rise on 42nd Street kept calling the elevator a "magic box" while I was replacing the door rollers. He said it like I was just pushing buttons and not doing real work. Has anyone else had people act like our job is some kind of mystery they don't respect?

Yeah, that stuff really gets old, doesn't it...

@joseph_adams66 your buddy handled that PERFECTLY. People really don't get how much skill goes into keeping those doors aligned and the safeties working right. That "magic box" comment from the old guy would've gotten under my skin too, like we're just playing around instead of stopping people from getting crushed. The respect problem is real, especially when they're standing there watching us do complicated work and still act like we're button pushers. Honestly, some folks just can't handle seeing a skilled trade being done right in front of them.

My buddy had a guy on his route tell him he just "plays with buttons all day" while fixing a stuck door on the 15th floor. The guy kept watching him adjust the limit switches and asked if he had a "real job" on the side. My buddy just laughed and said yeah, he fixes the box that keeps you from falling 15 stories.
