Eight years in and I just realized I've been lubing guide rails with the wrong grease.
A senior guy from Otis pointed out my tub of lithium grease was actually for hinges, not rails, after he saw the buildup on a car I did in Raleigh last Thursday - has anyone else found out they were using the wrong lube for years?

Damn, that's a rough way to find out lol. Glad you caught it before things got that bad though.

Had a buddy who used white lithium grease on elevator rails for like five years before someone told him it was for door hinges. The rails gummed up so bad they had to shut down the whole car for three days to strip it all off. He still gets crap about it at safety meetings.
