Always thought the counterweight ratio was just a basic calculation...

I was reading an old Otis manual from the 80s and it mentioned a specific 40% safety factor built into the governor rope strength for traction elevators. Found out it's because they account for potential corrosion over decades, not just static load. Does that factor still hold with modern synthetic ropes, or have the standards changed?

That spec sheet xena_fox39 mentioned is a real eye-opener. The new materials basically make the old rule useless. Guess we all need to update our cheat sheets now.
