Which repair method wins: hot air rework station vs soldering iron for tiny SMD caps?
I've been fixing up some old gaming motherboards from around 2012 and ran into a debate with a buddy of mine last week. He swears by using a hot air station for those tiny SMD capacitors, says it's way faster and less risk of lifting pads. But I've been just using a fine tip soldering iron with some flux and tweezers (takes longer, but I feel like I have more control). What's your go-to for those 0402 or 0603 components, and have you ever ruined a board with one method over the other?

...oh man I feel you so hard on this one. I was fixing an old ASUS board last month with those tiny 0603 caps near the CPU socket and I swear my buddy was yelling at me to just use hot air but I'm with you on the iron and tweezers method. I actually wrecked a pad on a different board once because I got impatient with hot air and blew the cap right off plus melted some nearby plastic connectors. The iron gives me that slow steady hand control where I can nudge the cap into place and watch the solder flow exactly where I want it. I'd rather take my time than risk roasting the whole area around the component.

Yeah but 0603s aren't exactly tiny though, try 0201s sometime.

oh man, I wrecked a pad on a laptop board last year doing the exact same thing. hot air seemed like the quick fix but i just ended up melting a little plastic tab off the RAM slot and had to glue it back. the iron and tweezers method is so much more forgiving, even if it takes ten extra seconds. i'd rather sit there fiddling with a cap for five minutes than deal with burnt connectors and swearing under my breath.
