Cheap multimeter almost cost me a $400 motherboard repair
Was testing a dead ASUS board last week and my $15 meter gave me a false voltage reading on a capacitor. Swapped to my Fluke and found the real short in 5 minutes. What budget tools have burned you on a job?

$15 meter strikes again. Trusting it cost you more than a Fluke would've.

It's a good reminder that even cheap meters can give wrong info if you're not careful. Had a buddy chase a phantom voltage for an hour once with a $20 one before he grabbed my old Fluke.

That "cost you more than a Fluke would've" part I gotta push back on a little @wendy_jackson. See I've been using a cheap meter for years now on basic household stuff and it works fine for what I need... not everyone is a professional electrician running critical circuits. A Fluke is great if you've got the budget and the need but for checking if a battery's dead or testing an outlet a $15 meter gets the job done just fine. The real issue is knowing your limits with any tool not the price tag on it.
