The way we handle knob and tube is completely different now

Back in the early 2000s, my old boss would just splice new Romex right into the old cloth wiring in attics. We did a whole house in Tacoma like that. Now, after seeing a few melted junction boxes, I won't touch a job unless the client agrees to a full rewire from the panel. The risk just isn't worth it anymore. Anyone else have a hard rule on this now?

Wait, they just spliced it right in the attic? No junction box, nothing? That's wild. I saw a place where someone did that and the cloth insulation just crumbled away. Left a charred spot on the ceiling joist you could stick your thumb in. How that place never burned down is a miracle.

Guess my old boss would've fired me on day one.
