Old timer told me to stop using those fancy auto-darkening hoods for boiler work
I was up on a boiler retrofit job last Tuesday over in Cincinnati, and this 65-year-old pipefitter named Hank kept telling me my auto-darkening hood was gonna fail when I needed it most. I laughed it off until I dropped a wrench and the battery cover popped off, and there I was stuck in a tight corner with no shade and sparks flying everywhere. He handed me a beat-up passive lens hood and I finished the day without any issues. Has anyone else had a battery die at the worst possible time?

Learned that lesson the hard way welding upside down once too.

Dude yeah, it's brutal. Had a bead go wrong once and a huge glob landed right on my glove. Couldn't shake it off fast enough.

Welding upside down makes the slag fall right in your hood.
