A new apprentice asked me why we still run so much 12/2 in new builds
We were wiring a house in Boise and he pointed out the cost difference with 14 gauge for lighting. It made me realize we often just do what we've always done. How do you guys decide on wire sizing for residential lighting circuits?

Check local codes first, then consider future upgrades like ceiling fans.

That's a solid point about the cost difference. But honestly, do you ever worry about voltage drop on longer runs with the smaller wire, especially in bigger houses these days? I get the code minimum is one thing, but some of these master bedroom circuits run halfway across the place.

Master bedroom circuits halfway across the place" is exactly why I always oversize wire for those long runs.
