20 year old panel swap taught me to always check the main breaker first

Spent 45 minutes chasing a dead leg on a resi panel in Austin last Tuesday before I realized the main was tripped, has anyone else wasted time on something that simple?

Man I used to think checking the main was overkill but now it's literally step one for me every time.

Your main was tripped the whole time? No way. That's brutal, like a whole level of embarrassment I can feel from here. I spent two hours once on a dead outlet that ended up being a GFCI in a garage I didn't even know existed, so I get the sinking feeling. But the main breaker is usually one of the first things I check now after a similar waste of time. Idk why our brains skip right over the biggest, most obvious switch in the whole box.
