Why I went with spray foam over batt insulation in my Edmonton basement

I spent weeks going back and forth on insulating my basement in our 1950s bungalow near Whyte Ave. Everyone said batt was cheaper at about $0.80 per square foot, but I bit the bullet on closed-cell spray foam at $2.50 a square foot. Three months in I can already tell the difference - the basement stays way warmer and I don't feel any drafts near the rim joists. Has anyone else made this switch and noticed a big change on their heating bills?

Yeah I actually read this article from the Building Science Corporation that said spray foam does a way better job at air sealing than anything else. Sounds like you dodged a bullet with those rim joists because batt insulation just leaves gaps that let cold air sneak in. I did my attic last year with spray foam and my furnace runs less often now, even on those -30 days. That initial cost hurt but it's basically paying for itself every winter.

That spray foam really locks in the heat way better than anything else I've tried...

My house in Calgary felt way warmer after switching to spray foam too.
