Vent: Contractor told me my 30-year-old furnace just needed a new filter, not a $5,000 replacement

He actually spent 20 minutes showing me how to clean the flame sensor with a dollar bill, saved me a full weekend of work and a huge bill. Has anyone else had a pro talk them out of spending money?

Nah I gotta disagree a bit here. I mean yeah it's nice the guy didn't try to upsell you but a good contractor should be doing that anyway. It's literally their job to diagnose the problem right not just sell you the most expensive fix. I've had way too many HVAC guys come out and immediately start talking about full replacements when a simple cleaning or a $30 part would've done the trick. If anything this guy just did the bare minimum of being honest. The fact that it's so rare and surprising just shows how low the bar is in this industry.

Funny how that works, @walker.max ... honesty's become the exception instead of the rule everywhere these days.
