That $40 caulking gun I cheaped out on cost me 3 hours of cleanup
I thought I was being smart buying the basic home depot caulking gun for my bathroom reno. Well the plunger slipped halfway through the tub surround and I had silicone EVERYWHERE. Took me an entire afternoon with scrapers and goo gone to fix the mess. Has anyone else had a tool fail that ended up costing way more in time than just buying the good version?

@murray.spencer I get what you're saying about the dripless ones, but honestly that's not really the point here. The cheap gun failing isn't just about the cleanup time, it's about the whole job now being compromised because of a bad seal in areas you already finished. Sometimes buying the cheapest tool is just false economy, plain and simple. You might save 20 bucks upfront but end up wasting a whole afternoon fixing the mess it made.

Have you ever tried just taping off the nozzle before you start? I've had the same thing happen with a cheap gun and it ruined a whole line of caulk I already smoothed out. Now I always wrap a little piece of tape around the tip when I set it down, keeps the air from drying it out. Also, I keep a wet rag handy to wipe the nozzle clean between passes, helps the seal hold better. Honestly, sometimes the cheap ones just aren't worth it, I'd rather spend a few extra bucks on a gun that doesn't leak than redo an hour of work. Lesson learned the hard way for me too.
