That $20 moisture meter I bought for drywall turned out to save my basement reno

I was putting up new drywall in my basement last fall and kept hitting spots where the mud would crack. My neighbor swore by this cheap moisture meter from Home Depot to check the drywall before taping. I thought it was nonsense, but after three cracked joints I caved and got one. Turns out the old wall behind the new stuff had a slow leak from a pipe, reading at 18% moisture. Has anyone else had a cheap tool like that expose a bigger problem?

And once you start checking everything with it, you find problems you never knew existed. I tested some drywall in my laundry room and got 12%. Turned out the dryer vent was dumping humid air right behind the wall. Fixed the vent, dried it out, no more peeling paint. Now I check every wall before I even hang a picture. It's like a cheap insurance policy that pays for itself the first time it catches something.
