Question about venting a bathroom fan through the roof in Edmonton winter

I tried installing a new bathroom fan last weekend and hit a wall of ice when I cut through the roof deck. The vent pipe froze solid before I could even get the flashing on, and now I have a hole in my roof with a tarp over it. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of winter install problem?

Why would you use fire on a roof covered in ice and snow?

Rookie mistake, buddy. You gotta preheat the pipe and work fast with heat tape or a torch before the frost sets in. Tarp and prayer is my usual Edmonton winter fix when things go sideways. Hope you got a good ladder and no wind forecast for today.
