Put $3500 into blown-in attic insulation and it paid for itself in 2 years

I used to think insulation was a scam until my hydro bills hit $400 a month in January. My buddy who works at GreenFox in Edmonton convinced me to blow in R60 worth of cellulose. Dropped my heating costs by about 30% and my upstairs actually stays warm now. Has anyone else around here noticed a real difference after doing their attic?

R60 is way overkill for most of Alberta unless you've got a super leaky house or vaulted ceilings that need compensating for. I ran the numbers myself after getting quotes and figured the extra upfront cost would take like 8 years to break even versus just going with R50. Plus if your attic isn't air sealed properly first, all that extra fluff does nothing but settle and trap moisture. I'd rather spend that money on a good door sweep and some weather stripping around windows.
