Just found out 30% of heat loss in Edmonton homes is through the rim joist...
Watched a video from a local energy auditor who said sealing those rim joists in my basement could save me around $200 a winter, has anyone else had luck with that spray foam stuff?

Wait, you used to think rim joists weren't a big deal too? I always figured the walls and attic were where all the real heat loss happened, until our energy bill kept climbing and a friend showed me how drafty the basement rim was. Sealing those up with spray foam for about $50 in materials actually made a noticeable difference, and our place feels less chilly near the floor now.

Funny you mention that because I had the exact same realization a few years back... my place was drafty by the floor and I thought it was the old windows. A buddy who does insulation work came over with a smoke pen and showed me air just pouring in through the rim joist gaps. Took a Saturday, grabbed a couple cans of the big gap spray foam, and stuffed some fiberglass in the bigger holes first then foamed over it. Made a huge difference in how even the temperature feels across the room now, especially near the baseboards. It's one of those cheap fixes that actually pays off quick.

Smoke pen is the real MVP in that story.
