Finally tried the cold patch approach for my driveway crack instead of the hot stuff

Been fighting a 4 foot crack in my driveway near Whyte Ave for two years. Always used the hot asphalt patch in the black bucket. Gets everywhere, melts in the sun, looks awful. Last month I tried that cold patch that comes in a bag from Home Depot. 15 bucks a bag. Just pounded it in with the back of a shovel. Its been 6 weeks and through two rainstorms its still holding. Has anyone else had better luck with the cold patch?

My buddy tried the same thing on his parents' place out by Beaumont and it actually held better than the hot stuff through the winter frost heave. I remember when I was a kid we used to just pour old motor oil on cracks and call it a day. My dad swore by that method till the city told him to stop. Now I just use whatever bag is cheapest at Canadian Tire and hope for the best. The cold stuff really surprised me though, I figured it would just wash away like the winter pothole mix. Its nice when something actually works the way its supposed to for once.

How long did that cold patch actually last before it needed redoing?

Plus the cold patch actually stays flexible, right? I found that on my own driveway the hot stuff gets brittle and cracks again after one freeze-thaw cycle, while the cold stuff just moves with the ground. I wonder if that flexibility is the real reason it holds up better in the long run.
