Can we talk about my furnace going out in the middle of a -40 stretch
Two weeks ago my 15 year old Rheem furnace decided to die on the coldest night of the year when it hit -42 with wind chill. The heat exchanger had a crack that was leaking carbon monoxide into the house, and I only found out because my CO alarm went off at 3am. Anyone else have a furnace fail at the worst possible time and how did you handle the emergency replacement situation?

Man that is absolutely terrifying. The CO alarm going off at 3am is like a horror movie, I can't imagine waking up to that sound knowing your heat exchanger is cracked and leaking poison into your house while it's -42 outside. That detail alone makes my stomach drop. I had a furnace die on me once but it was like 20 degrees out, not deadly cold like that. You handled that way better than I would have, I probably would have panicked and called the fire department. Props to you for having a working CO alarm, that seriously might have saved your life.

Yeah the "poison leaking in while you're asleep" part is what gets me too. I used to think those alarms were kind of overkill, you know? Like how many people actually die from that stuff. But reading about it like this definitely changed my mind. I went and bought two more CO detectors for different floors after I saw your post @caleb_thomas93. Just not worth messing around with something you can't smell or see.

The part about not being able to smell or see it is what really gets under my skin. I've got three kids and I worry about stuff like that all the time. Do you think the detectors are okay to put in hallways or should they be closer to the bedrooms? I've got one in the basement near the furnace but I never really thought about needing more until now.
