Went back to hand taping after swearing by flat boxes for 2 years

I was at a job in Columbus last month, finishing a basement with 12 foot ceilings. My flat box kept clogging on the butts and I had to stop every 20 minutes to clean it out. A older guy named Joe on the next crew over just laughed and handed me his mud pan and knife. I tried it for the first time in years and dang, I got through the whole room in half the time without any cussing. Has anyone else ditched a tool you thought was faster for the old school way?

Hold on, let me get this straight. You had one bad day with a flat box at a job with 12 foot ceilings and you're ready to throw the whole tool away? I've been using flat boxes for about 5 years now and yeah, they clog sometimes but it's usually because I'm running the mud too thick or my tape is old. Switching back to hand taping for a whole room sounds like a recipe for a sore wrist the next morning to me. I mean, are you really saving time if you're having to mix up smaller batches and stop to clean your pan every few feet anyway? Seems like a lot of people think one tool is a magic bullet when really it's just about knowing how to use it right.

Buddy of mine swore by a hawk and trowel for years until he tried a roller mudder.

Wow, one bad day and you're ready to ditch years of muscle memory?
