Watch out for that new lightweight joint compound from last year

Last month I was finishing a big job on a house in Tacoma, using that new 'easy sand' lightweight stuff everyone was talking about. I did a whole ceiling with it, three coats like normal. A week after we left, the homeowner calls me freaking out because hairline cracks showed up everywhere. I went back and the tape was pulling away from the seams. The compound just didn't have the grab. My buddy at the supply house said he's seen three other guys with the same issue since spring. It saves your arm but costs you a callback. Now I'm back to my old reliable bucket for anything bigger than a patch. Has anyone else had a bad run with the lightweight mixes, or found one that actually holds up?

Ugh, my buddy's whole ceiling came down with that stuff!

Man, did you try mixing it with any regular mud to see if that helped?

Oh yeah, adding regular mud to the magic ceiling-falling mud, that's the PRO move right there. Because when one type of plaster fails, the solution is always more plaster from the ground. Next you'll tell me to fix a broken window by throwing another rock at it. Genius.
