Saw a guy mudding with a 14 inch knife and it blew my mind

Was on a job in Raleigh last week and this older fella was finishing whole walls with just one big taping knife... no corner tools, no banjo, just a hawk and a 14 inch. Made me wonder if I'm overcomplicating my setup with all these specialty tools. Any of you guys work that way or stick to the full kit?

Respectfully, that setup sounds like a nightmare for any ceiling work or inside corners. A 14 inch knife is great for long flat runs on walls but you're gonna spend way more time wiping down drips and fighting with the mud in tight spots. Specialty tools exist for a reason they make the job faster and cleaner even if the old timers like to brag about doing it the hard way.

Gotta admit I used to roll my eyes at people saying specialty tools were worth it but posts like this actually make me think. Maybe I've been making things harder than they need to be just to prove a point.

Right, because nothing says "fun day at work" like wrestling a 14 inch knife into an inside corner and hoping for the best.
