Almost lost a whole ceiling to one bad stud shoe

Over in Boise last month I was hanging board on a basement ceiling and a guy named Jerry who used to frame walked up and pointed at a metal stud shoe that was barely holding a joist. He said 'that whole row will come down if you put weight on it' and sure enough the next joist sagged a quarter inch when I pushed. How many of you actually check the framing before you start hanging?

Man that's exactly the kind of thing that keeps me up at night... Jerry was looking out for you big time. I always walk the whole ceiling grid or joist layout before I even bring a sheet of board in. It sounds simple but people skip it and regret it later. One bad stud shoe or a cracked joist can take out a whole row of work and cost you a day or more to fix. I've seen guys just slap mud over a sagging seam and call it good but that always comes back to haunt them. Checking for nail pops and loose framing first is just common sense once you've learned the hard way.

My buddy Dave did that mud over the sagging seam trick once on his first bathroom job and the whole thing let go six months later, the homeowner showed up at his doorstep with the drywall in his hands. He still brings it up at poker night like it was yesterday.

Honestly, Dave is probably still waiting for that homeowner to show up with the rest of it too.
