Straight edge is a total game changer, man. Holly420 is right about the bubbles, but a good press with the edge fixes that.

Wait, you're taping before the mud dries? I always let the first coat of mud dry completely, then sand it flat before I even put tape on. Taping into wet mud can cause bubbles and won't fix a wavy wall.
