A basement in Cincinnati taught me to check for plumbing before cutting.
Cutting a hole for a new outlet box. Hit a copper water line with my rotary tool. Water sprayed everywhere, had to shut off the main. Cost me a whole afternoon and a call to a plumber. Anyone have a good trick for spotting hidden pipes in old walls?

How about we just accept that every old house project needs an emergency fund? I drilled into a cast iron waste line once, and the smell was a special kind of DIY lesson. You really do learn the hard way.
